Teddy Bear Project
Gleaning for the World
During September and October of 2004, we collected teddy bears and other stuffed animals for Gleaning for the World's teddy bear project. This year we collected 248 stuffed animals as part of this international mission project.
Gleaning for the World collects new and gently used stuffed animals to ship to orphanages in Guatemala, Haiti, and Nigeria. Some of these bears will be given to children in detox units as they "dry out", giving them something cudly to hold in the process of being weaned off narcotics.
Operation Teddy Bear takes these second-hand stuffed animals to orphanages in developing countries for distribution to children at Christmas. Most children entering an orphanage in a developing country come from an environment where life is a struggle for daily survival and many are addicted to dangerous drugs. Unfortunately, for rehabilitation the children are placed in cages, for their safety as well as the safety of their caretakers and other children, until they overcome their addictions. This “cage life” as well as entering an orphanage is a very traumatic experience for many children. By providing them with a stuffed animal, each child is given a personal possession to keep, providing them with security and a chance to hear about the love of Christ.
HOW TO HELP
As we collect Teddy Bears and other stuffed animalswe add a $1 donation to GFTW to defray shipping costs. In 2003, GFTW's Operation Teddy Bear project provided an emotional sense of security and the news of Jesus Christ to thousands of children living in Guatemala, Nigeria, and El Salvador.
Next year, we will be collecting Bears once more in support of this project. Think about this project during the year as you rummage through your excess belongings.
We also continue to help Gleaning for the World on the second Thursday of each month, sending a team to aid in their varied ministry projects.
